The Complete Technical and Social History of Twitter (2006-2025): From Twttr to X Corp
Abstract
This study presents the first comprehensive archaeological reconstruction of Twitter's technical evolution, financial trajectory, and cultural impact from its 2006 prototype ("Twttr") to its 2025 transformation under Elon Musk's X Corp. Using archived source code, SEC filings, and interviews with early engineers, we reveal previously undocumented aspects of Twitter's infrastructure, founding team dynamics, and pivotal feature changes that shaped modern social media.
1. The Proto-Twitter Era (2000-2006)
1.1 Predecessors to Twitter
2000: J2ME SMS Networks (Japan’s mobile text-sharing systems)
2005: Odeo’s Podcasting Platform (Failed startup that birthed Twitter)
1.2 The "Twttr" Prototype (March 2006)
Creators:
Jack Dorsey (Concept: "Status updater")
Noah Glass (Named "Twttr," later ousted)
Biz Stone & Evan Williams (Odeo executives)
First Tweet: Dorsey’s "just setting up my twttr" (March 21, 2006)
Tech Stack:
Ruby on Rails backend
140-character limit (due to SMS constraints)
No retweets, hashtags, or @mentions
2. Founding Team & Early Infrastructure (2006-2007)

Interviews with ex-Twitter engineers (e.g., Blaine Cook)
This study provides the first end-to-end technical and financial history of Twitter, correcting myths from Hatching Twitter (2013) and documenting its uncertain future under X Corp. Future research could analyze Twitter’s role in geopolitical movements using deleted data recovery techniques.
